Electric
fishing is widely used to sample fish in rivers and streams. The machine
sits in a backpack which enables the operator to move easily around the area
being surveyed. The fish swim towards an electrode held by the
operator. The electric fishing machine (EFM) creates an electric field in
the water that interferes with the central nervous system of the fish.
This enables the fish to be scooped up in a hand net for closer study.
This method of sampling affects the fish temporarily and is generally considered
both safer for the fish and more effective than netting.
